SPACES IN FLORIDA’S RV PARKS ARE AT a premium in winter. Like migratory birds, many snowbirds return to the same places year after year and reservations are made months in advance. “Location, location, location” takes second-place to availability when you are scrambling for a place to spend the next six weeks, so we settled for Thonotosassa instead of Clearwater. Actually Happy Traveler RV Park is a comfortable, friendly place under the live oaks. It has cable TV, decent wifi, fantastic restrooms and is convenient to both I-75 and I-4, making it ideal for Spring Training games.
Waiting in the rain can be surreal
Driving time to Tampa doesn’t correlate to the crow-flying distance — crows don’t have to cross the bay on the causeway — but we don’t plan on going into town often. The first time was on a rainy day to the Dali Museum. On this day we were more interested in the Frida Kahlo exhibit that in Sal’s work; we had seen Dali’s best, and worst, at his home/studio in Figueres, Spain back in 2011. We knew of Kahlo from our drive through Mexico when we searched out Diego Rivera’s famous murals and learned that she was his on-again, off-again spouse and a painter in her own right. Sort of. The exhibit focused more of Frida’s traumatic life and unconventional lifestyle than on her art. Which is OK since most of her paintings were eyebrow intensive self-portraits.

There was one Dali that we hadn’t seen before and really liked. Gala Looking at the Mediterranean Sea Which at 20 Meters Looks Like Abraham Lincoln is just that. Up close, a naked Gala stares seaward surrounded by a crucifix of light. Back up to 20 meters and you see a pixelated portrait of Lincoln. Squinting helps.
