THE ENGLISH HAVE DUNKIRK WHILE THE AUSSIES and Kiwi’s celebrate Gallipoli. We Yanks came in second in Southeast Asia but hardly ever mention it. But when it comes to celebrating defeat, no one comes close to Texas. Travis, Bowie and Crocket (along with the “Duke”) are deified in the Lone Star State where “Remember the Alamo” is second only to “Don't mess with Texas!” People tend to forget that the mission formerly known as San Antonio de Valero Mission was a part of Mexico, not the United States and Crocket et. al. were alien residents, not in a Roswellian sense but in the “green card” sense.
Mission San Jose; locally built and managed
In fact, the missions like the Alamo and San Jose were originally run by Spanish missionaries and were built by indigenous people with Mayan surnames. By the mid-Nineteenth Century Mexicans were in the minority in the territory so the Americans felt justified in staking their claim. I wonder what would happen if the growing Latino community becomes the majority and decides to retake Texas.
A great place for lunch
For visitors like us, the real treat in San Antonio is the famed Riverwalk. It's quiet, cool and chaming — and the perfect place to have lunch on a slow Sunday.
