FORT HUACHUCA, HOME TO THE FAMOUS “Buffalo Soldiers” of yore wasn’t any warmer than Wilcox. In fact we had several inches of snow one night. But the “FamCamp” at this army base was the nicest — and cheapest — yet. We set up on a concrete pad with cable TV, great wifi just across from the shower block. We shopped at the post commissary and found some great birding right on the base, adding the beautiful painted redstart and rare Sinaloa wren to our list.

Sierra Vista is the main town in the area and we were able to track down Connie’s aging uncle Ken whom we last visited in 2006. Connie also connected with his daughter Eva whom she hadn’t seen since they were kids. Before we moved on we visited Jim where he and son Tom were toiling on the never-ending task that is a fixer-upper. He isn’t sure if he will keep it or sell when (if?) he finishes but he got a great deal on the place so he’ll win either way.
