SOMETHING SEEMED FAMILIAR ABOUT SOPRON, located in the tiny nipple of northwestern Hungary that juts into Austria near the wetlands of Ferto-Neusiedler National Park. A quick look back at our journal from the winter of 2013-14 reminded me that we had visited before on a day trip from Austria. But it was cold, there were no birds to speak of in the wetlands and we had only Euros, so we didn’t stick around.
Countryside of Hungary
This time we visited on purpose, mostly to visit the national park, but we found Sopron to be a charming town and Hello Aparman a wonderful base of operations. We spent most of our time in outside of town, searching for new birds and enjoying the countryside but a walk through the old part of Sopron gave us a glimpse of old Hungary.
