Friday, after working all day Thursday, seems like a Saturday which fits because it is actually the beginning of our week-end. But today is laundry day. It’s amazing how much dirty laundry accumulates, what with shorts in the morning; long trousers, socks and shoes for bike trips and public appearances and warm tops for post-thunderstorm cold times. And it really becomes a chore. You hand-wash in one basin, then a first rinse in another and a final rinse in a third. Before you can hang the clothes you have to hand wring them. I am glad we brought clothes pins. The clothes must be getting cleaner because the water gets dirty.
Sitting and talking seems to be a big part of African life, at least when they are not walking to some distant place. Perhaps it is the lack of a strong work ethic or perhaps just a lack of work. Regardless, we are guilty this afternoon too. We can blame it on the rain or claim we have already done a lot. But the result is the same – sloth! While we were hanging out reading a Ugandan pushed his bicycle in with a large bag of avocados strapped to the carrier. With Jonathon translating, I purchased 8 large fruits for 1,000USh ($.55) and gave half to Jonathon as we couldn’t possibly eat them all before they spoiled. That’s $.07 each!
