Tawharanui is a predator free mainland island; keeping pests like weasels and rats out can be a challenge, however having the entire peninsular fenced and bailted has made this regional park a haven for New Zealand's wildlife and enable the successful reintroduction of some endangered wildlife like the North Island Kiwi.
