Situated an hour north of Auckland this Regional park is a favourite for recreational activities sitting alongside an important conservation area and marine reserve.

Sand dunes and their grasses provide cover for the NZ Dotterel where they breed and nest. Dunes are in decline in NZ due to development and invasive species. Dunes in Tawharanui are cordoned off for the protection of the dunes and the dotterel.

The coastline is never ending and waiting to be explored. Some of these rock formations have fossils in them from the Jurassic period. Year round recreational activities sit comfortably side by side with a successful conservation programme where many of New Zealand's endangered birds, reptiles and insects thrive.
