Situated an hour north of Auckland this Regional park is a favourite for recreational acitivties sitting alongside an important conservation area and marine reserve.

Sand dunes and their grasses provide cover for the New Zealand dotterel where they breed and nest. Dunes are in decline in New Zealand due to development and invasive species. Dunes in Tawharanui are cordoned off for their protection and the dotterels.

The coastline is never ending and waiting to be explored. Some of these rock formations have fossils in them from the Jurassic period. Year round recreational activities sit comfortably side by side with a successful conservation programme where many of New Zealand's endangered birds, reptiles and insects thrive.
