Troyes - Walking and exploring

FRANCE | Wednesday, 16 October 2013 | Views [315]

No rain today so set off on a Walking Tour which involved following the red line on a map I got at La Maison Tourisme the day before. Absolutely gorgeous town about the size of Albury although the tour obviously only covered the central old part of the town. Lots of very old half-timbered buildings - most of which were on a bit of lean - painted in many different colours. The St Urbain Basilica and the Cathedral of St Peter and St Paul were magnificent! There was a plaque commemorating Joan of Arc at the Cathedral. Together with the Dauphin, Troyes was the first town recaptured by her in 1429 on the march to Reims.

My last stop on the tour was the Hotel de Vauluisant (another amazing building) which now contains two museums - a history of Troyes museum and a hosiery museum. The town history museum was mainly 16th century sculptures and statues. I preferred these ones to the perfect (or perfectly restored) ones at Versailles. Quite a few of these ones were missing their heads or hands. There was also a cabinet which had a heap of heads and hands in it. I assume they'd tried to match the loose bits with the sculptures they had but maybe not. The other museum had fascinating displays about the textiles industry in Troyes. Lots of old - as in really really old - spinning wheels, looms and sewing machines. There were also many examples of the vests, bonnets and stockings produced in Troyes over the years. Most of the stockings had been intricately embroidered.

Back to the Irish pub for dinner again tonight. I had the small vegetarian pizza which could have fed a family of four! And the vegetables included artichokes, asparagus, olives, mushrooms and so on. Delicious!
