Sucre, the sugar capital of Bolia

BOLIVIA | Thursday, 15 March 2007 | Views [870]

Well we've gotten waylaid in Sucre - the offical capitial of this country - something most Bolivians forgets. the supreme court meets here but that's about it it terms of impressive government stuff.

Sucre is also the chocolate capital of Bolivia - something we've been testing with all the local chocolate shops.

We caught up with friends from the animal refuge and after several days of chilling here and making plans to head to Argentina we got talked into staying for another 6 days to attend the local carnival here - bring on the local dancing.

The weather has been fabulous here, we both gotten burnt because we keep forgetting that you'll cook quicker when 2kms closer to the sun.

I (Jess) went to the local textile museum and loved it - this is the first place we've really noticed a difference in the weavings produced in the area and they're stunning between each local tribe. I've fallen in love wih a certain type (wall hanging from Tarabuco tribe) that takes a women 6 - 9 months to weave and that's weaving 10 - 12 hours a day. As you'ld expect the price is a few weeks budget but we're thinking about them. But the weave it upsidedown and they tell their year as a story with weddings, deaths, harvests, carnevals all shown clearly in the weavings. There is one that both Glen and I love but the women started the year with funeral and death colours (blues, greens and purples) and over the nine months she weaved she didn't lose any family members but instead had a wedding - so the story is about a good year for the family but she was obviously expecting tradgety. We'll see more of these weavings this weekend when we stay in Tarabuco for the festival.

Photos will be added in about 2 weeks (currently it's taking us 8 minutes to sign into email so I'm not even going to contemplate uploading photos)

Life is good, it's been nice to settle down with friends and splurge a little being in a rich town (witht he government officials) We had french last night - amazing meals for $3 each and we're going to be having swiss sometime soon.

Gotta go get some more chocolate (all in the name of research)
