Once Upon A Time In A Place (Not) So Far, Far Away...

Worldwide | Monday, November 7, 2011 | 5 photos

The story which my photographs tell is not so much about the place they were taken at, a park in my home city; they are devoted to telling a story about the places that visited me at that park. I took these photographs at two folklore festivals where people from Eastern Europe and the Near East had gathered to celebrate and revive their traditions through dance. These two regions have had conflicts in the past, and as someone who lives here, I do know that all of us tend to not forget the past that easily. However, my photographs represent the love of these people for their culture and the respect they have learned to have for neighboring customs. I found this inspiring and worthy of telling about. My photographs show what I love about photography. I have been fascinated with it since the age of nine. That fascination grew into admiration for the power of photography to communicate through art and thus move people on more than one level. These characteristics of photography make me dream that one day I will be able to tell powerful and meaningful visual stories as photographers from magazines such as the National Geographic do. I want to create images and help people realize that there are many eyes that can guide them to a better view of the world. This year I started university. I plan to major in Journalism and Mass Communication and Politics and International Relations; however, photography does remain a passion of mine, which I hope I can combine with my current studies one day. I believe that the knowledge I can receive from these two majors can help me in the photography that I want to do, but I still need to develop my photographic skills, and I think this exciting opportunity is one of the best ways to do that.
