This woman celebrates her gypsy roots by performing a traditional dance. In Bulgaria there is tension between gypsy people and Bulgarians, and it was encouraging to see that gypsy culture was acknowledged at the festival; the audience did have fun watching gypsy dances.

Dancers from Cyprus are performing a traditional dance. I love the mood in this picture because their smiles to me are a sign that they enjoyed sharing their traditions with those of near to Cyprus countries. It was great to have the capital, Sofia, of my country, Bulgaria, unite them.

The same woman who danced a gypsy dance, here, is part of a traditional Bulgarian dance. One can see that she embraces both her gypsy roots and Bulgarian traditions, and unity between cultures overcoming differences from the past or present is what I aim to show through these photographs.
