The crowd circles the Stupa moves clockwise, keeping the monument on its right.
Kathmandu the capital of Nepal, houses seven World Heritage sites. The Swayambhu Stupa was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979 A.D. Besides being one of the main Stupas of the country - it is also the world's oldest Stupa. But part of the charm of this historic Stupa is that it has not been cordoned off and reduced into being a museum piece. The stupa is always surrounded by life. Crowds of worshipers come to make offerings, light oil lamps, burn fragrant incense, and string up new prayer flags. The crowd perform 'kora' or ritual circumambulation for religious merit, in a clockwise direction, keeping the monument on its right as a sign of respect.
