Arrived in sweltering Cairns at 10.20pm where the humidity said hiya as I walked out of the airport terminal & trickled down my back while I was trying to unpack the basics in the dark to have a quick shower and get to bed at the Bohemia Resort. Lucky for me this was the worst it got as far as humidity was concerned & the rest of my stay was bearable.
So of course while one is in Cairns and the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef one must spend the cash and do the snorkelling day trip out to the Reef. Sadly sadly for me I got VERY VERY VERY sick and landed up feeding the fish from about 45 minutes before we arrived until we headed off again which was a true tragedy to be sure. I did however stop long enough to do about a 30 - 45 minute snorkel thank goodness so I did get to experience a little of the Great Barrier Reef which I would have to agree is certainly Great. As I was feeling rather ill I landed up lying face down on the side of the boat from after lunch until we got back to the harbour and needless to say got a nasty burn that has now turned into a 'gorgeous' tan on my back. Ahhhhhhhhh well. C'est la Vie. Can't expect it all to be awesome & at this point this and the dunny's have really been my only 'bad' experiences.
Took a little day trip around Cairns with a local born and bred shoeless Cairns man which was quite authentic and a little 'off the beaten track' which I am enjoying as i like to experience a bit of the locals as much as I like to experience the places and he had some interesting tales to tell us about a man getting munched by a croc a couple of weeks back and all that kind of fun and games.
Headed up to Cape Tribulation and PK's Jungle Village to see where the only (and apparently oldest) Rain Forest meets the ocean at Cape Tribulation & to do a little 'flying' amongst the trees in the forest which is always fun for me as I love those zip wires in trees. Unfortunately the weather was a bit rubbish with a fair amount of rain (strange that in a rain forest huh????) & the sea was not clear so the pictures don't match those of the postcards but nice to know what the potential is anyway & I have no doubt that when all conditions are good that it does look just like the poscard.
Stopped off at Port Douglas on the way back is really only worth doing a one nighter as there is not a whole heap to see but it is just a nice town North of Cairns that I was passing and thought I should stop off and have a look at. It is just one of those towns that has a nice feelig to it that I enjoyed and I believe has the highest number of millionaires per capita in one place.
Back to Cairns for a couple of days just to chill and enjoy the city and get everything booked for my trip South. Really looking forward to my hop on hop off trip down the the East Coast to the hippy town of Byron Bay.
