My brother's 'study nest'

The onset of high tech gadgets has changed the way kids study in my brother's generation. My brother is often working on a laptop, and communicating to his friends via an iPad, and listening to music on his iPod.

My brother, Henderson, is in Year 12 this year. Studying may seem trivial to most, but the education system in Australia means that the final mark you obtain in Year 12 can determine the rest of your life. My brother has to study hard, often late into the night, when everyone else in the house has gone to sleep.

An ongoing problem with the Year 12 HSC curriculum is that it encourages students like my brother to 'rote' learn, memorising essays and responses to typical questions in exams. Here, my brother is writing out an essay he is trying to memorise.
