    Meet Lloyd from Mbamba village. In Africa, kids hold your hands to demonstrate friendship, and to prevent anyone else from holding your hand. Lloyd held my hand as I walked through the village. All he wanted was to be my friend, and for me to play with him. by: simbolism Views[272] We visited the Mbamba Village Hospital where the doctor there showed us the room where mothers were recovering with their newborn babies. I had brought an instant camera with me for this purpose - I took family portraits of each mother with their baby and gave them their photos. Here is one mother watching as her life moment begins to appear on an instant photo. by: simbolism Views[273] In the southern part of Lake Malawi in the village of Mbamba is the village school. There are around 1,200 children enrolled in 8 classes, meaning there are over 100 children in each class from year 1 to year 8. The classes are under-resourced with low teacher to children ratio and insufficient books and pencils. Despite this, all the kids get school uniforms as this eliminates discrimination and gives the children the identity that they all deserve. by: simbolism Views[335] Passed on from ancient traditions, women including this young girl still carry loads on their heads where there is no less expensive, or more efficient, way of transporting things. Sometimes, women and girls carry up to 70% of their body weight on their heads. Men and boys are not seen doing this generally. by: simbolism Views[340] I met Happy in Chitimba village in the northern part of Lake Malawi. He was born in Lilongwe but moved to Chitimba and owns this corner shop where he sells cold drinks and snacks to the locals. As the village is close to the Tanzanian/Kenyan border, he also services people trading over the border. Not much goes on in the village, so you can see locals hanging around the shop and kids watch soccer on the TV in Happy's shop. by: simbolism Views[361]
