Why I am here

TANZANIA | Wednesday, 25 June 2008 | Views [215] | Comments [3]

I think it is about time I provide some updates about what exactly it is I am doing here. Well, these last three weeks I have served as a teacher (or mwanafunzi). The first two weeks I had a group of 22 students, girls and boys, between the ages of about 14 and 16. These kids are a riot. After the usual initial discomfort of learning how to teach in English, then have it translated into Swahili by someone who you hope is saying the same message you just gave, myself and the students warmed up to one another. In fact, I quickly developed a genuine fondness for each of them.

Actually, I am moving homestays and my new "mama" is here, so this post in done.

Love and miss,

Shannon

Shannon- Great to know you are in a new location. I hope you feel more connected and as your Mom, I'm of course hoping you feel safer as well. Dad and I look forward to hearing more about your students and teaching. I bet this weeks classroom has been much different than the past 2 weeks. All is well back home, Papa is getting better daily, just extremely tired. Janene returns to CA 6/28 and returns with the kids 7/6/08 for a long week. Sean arrives home 6/29 and has his surgery 7/1. Life stays busy. We all miss you and send our love. Have a great weekend and we will call Sunday ! Love, Mom and Dad

Shannon, I have read all your posts. It is quite an adventure you are having. Im sure some times it feels overwhealming but I am sure that when it is all over, you will be so glad you did it. I'll be looking forward to your next installment.
