Okk so let me explain to you what happens on NYE in valpo..Hundreds of thousands of people come from all over the world to valpo to experience NYE. Massive fireworks, packed street parties that last literally days after the 1st.
Soo this is what happened....after fighting off a decent hangover from the night of the 30th...we went out to a super-club, 5 stories, live music, the whole bit. I had to check out of my hostel bc rates for the night of the 31st are super high, like 50usd for a bed in a hostel. So me and my traveling mates r going to go for the all nighter and check back into a hostel on the 1st. So after i dropped by bags off at my next hostel for the day of the 1st, i went to the beach to get some sun. We met up, had a cheap eat of chicken and bread, and then went to the couchsurfing meeting at 9pm. From there the party began, cheap champagne 1000 pesos, or 1.4 dollars and cheap beer were going down fast.
We then made our way to sotomayo square, which is the main square of valparaiso. Monster statue, and a huge concert stage set up and blaring music. So we made up our way to the front of the square and eventually after hours of drinking it starts to begin..YOU must take a piss!! So me and my mates are in the middle of this massive crowd and we had to push our way out and find a corner somewhere, no bathrooms, and then we had to push our way back to the front of the square, luckily we made it back to the front of the square around 11:30pm. Perfect timing bc the fireworks started soon after we got back. There were about 3 or 4 big ships in the port all full with fireworks, and when they went off it was amazing!! The best i have ever seen by far..way better than tokyo´s!! When 12 was approaching they counted down on the loud speaker and the crowd was absolutely on their toes....sooo many people in the square you could hardly move...confettii everywhere...and when 12 hit everyone started spraying their champagne bottles in the air it was amazing!! Me and all my mates were absolutely drenched in chamagne...The finale of the fireworks coincided with the turn of the year...after 12 we all made our way down the streets partying and reveling in the moment...everyone was saying felix ano nuevo and loads of people greeted us and toasted champagne with us.. after a couple of hours partying on the street we went to another superclub in valpo...we partied until 7 or 8 am...went to the beach and had an hour or 2 to sleep..met some girls that had an apartment in valpo and we crashed on the couches of their place until 1 or 2 pm...it was pretty cool..like 3 families rented this apartment and they had no problems letting 2 gringos crash at their place...then we eventually said thanks and checked into our hostel...people were still partying SUPER hard at 2pm...almost saw a knife fight in front of my hostel and then i went to sleep for like 15 hours straight!! the most amazing night of my life!!!
