    On my way home, I stopped at Lahugala to observe elephants. But unluckily they had already left the river bank. What I could capture was this Hawk. But it was a pretty good snap because it flew near so that the beautiful designs of its feathers were visible. by: sameeraabeysuriya Views[226] We were treated with so much hospitality at the farmer’s little palace. The garden was a true beauty with all types of vegetables grown. And it was a bird paradise. A coconut tree was full of these birds, (we call them WADU (means carpenter) birds and their nests. It was such a beautiful housing scheme. Wadu bird is such a crafty nest builder and tourists have a high demand on them. But its illegal to sell them or their nests. by: sameeraabeysuriya Views[1403] We went to the above mentioned farmers house with his invitation. On the way what we saw was a young girl, her two little brothers and grandmother taking their cattle for feeding them. Cattle become very helpful in their cultivation and bring them a small extra income. by: sameeraabeysuriya Views[299] The youth follows their elders’ steps and take up the burden of cultivation. Farmers’ daughters get married around their 18’s usually to another farmers son where they strive to increase the land cultivated. This is a picture of such a young mother with her baby. by: sameeraabeysuriya Views[234] Monaragala is the major corn producing district of Sri Lanka. And the majority of the people here are corn farmers. Rain is a crucial factor for the cultivation. Both drought and heavy rains can damage the crop. Here this farmer is worried about the inadequacy of rainwater for his cultivation since that is what keeps his family fed. by: sameeraabeysuriya Views[605]
