Our road trip started with picking up our ride from avis. We hired a brand new kia minivan, If only the poor little kia knew that it would be spending its day cruising the local logging roads. We left Whistler and headed for some local hot springs. We went through Pemberton, around 40 minutes from Whistler. Past Pemberton we got lost and ended up in a one horse town called Birkin, pretty funny and a real insight into the 'simple life'.. Some properties were tiny houses that looked abandoned, or looked like they should have been abandoned. We finally got on the right track after getting directions from one of the many female road workers we have seen in Canada. We headed along a narrow road, past farms and Indian properties including teepee's etc. We came to a dirt logging road which snaked along a very pretty lake with some awesome views along the way. We drove this road for ages, passing the odd car and logging truck here and there. It was quiet scary passing the trucks as they didnt slow down one bit and there was not a whole lot of room to pass. Eventually we reached our goal after approx 50kms of dirt, (sorry avis), haha. The hot springs were very dissapointing as there was only one natural spring, which was boiling away and the rest were old tubs and spa baths, with hoses coming from the natural spring. Very dissapointing and pretty seedy! We ended up looking around and leaving without even having a swim... Lame! After another 50km of dirt home, we went by Pemberton and stopped at Nairn falls. The falls are located around 10mins along a walking trail. They were quite impressive with a large volume of water spilling into a calm section, then dropping again with huge force into a very turbulent part of the river. We got a few pics then trekked back to Whistler. All in all a good way to see some of the great scenery Canada has to offer.
