The beginning of the Sema ceremony of the whirling dervishes. This man is the revered master.

within the Fourth Courtyard of Topkapi palace where the family would have picnics and other types of recreations, often resting and eating in the two pavilion rooms shown here. From the pavilion rooms themselves one looks over the Golden Horn and the Bosphorus, seeing both Europe and Asia.

We were privileged to watch the ceremony in a mosque on the grounds of the whirling dervish museum. These are not for tourist, but the real deal. The Sema is very somber, very moving when they put themselves into a meditative trance and start to whirl.
