The City of Stories

Johannesburg, Jozi, 'The City of Gold', the city of lights - even where there is darkness. This is my home, and a place that I knew had too many stories buried in it to not tell with my camera. So I drove into the middle of the city, parked my car, and walked the streets with my camera, tripod and an excitement that always appears every time I know I am in faced of an opportunity to capture moments and stories that would have otherwise gone untold.
The first time I took photos, I knew I wanted it to be much more than just a fad. I am now currently studying photojournalism and I have an absolute and unaffected love for what I do because it’s an instinctive process; one that connects keen observation with feeling & an uncanny sense of how to construct a picture. I strive to combine sentiment and sensitivity for my subjects, whom I always treat with respect, kindness and maturity. I contribute to the art of photography because I take photos knowing that the final outcome is not only about the prints produced, but about the process; the cultures, people or landscapes with which you have an interaction, and the attitude with which you handle the making of an image.
I have a wonderfully positive view of this beautiful world we live in & am a focused, assiduous, smart and happy person. I try to reflect critically about the social and political meanings my photos will have and have the capacity to put my head, eye and heart on the same axis. This is not something contrived, but is the result of great affection and respect for the subject matter, their context, and an equal respect for the medium.
I am unbelievably keen to learn more about my favourite thing in the world to do. This scholarship and time with Jason would be an extraordinary opportunity for me; to improve my skill, grow as a photographer and a person, and come home knowing I have made some kind of a difference to every person, culture and moment I have met along the way.
