My Scholarship entry - Enchanted Seadragons

I am a marine biologist and marine educator and have only recently discovered the power of photography - both as an incredibly effective communication tool and as an equally addictive pursuit in and of itself. I stopped counting my scuba dives at about 4000 a number of years ago but in that time I never had time for underwater photography and therefore wasn't able to adequately describe the sheer beauty and wonder I encountered every time I donned a tank and went to work. It was only after having two total hip replacements as a consequence of my work for the United Nations that I discovered that I had something important to say about this wonderful environment that I had observed and loved passionately for over 20 years. I also found out that I genuinely loved teaching, from the youngest to the oldest, and that one of the best ways to communicate this love was to show a new generation of passionate people the stunning beauty of our natural world through photography. I know that I have an enormous amount to learn about the art and practice of photography but I also believe that passion and respect for the environment and the people who inhabit it are essential as a starting point.
