A bulldozer, watched by an expatriate labourer, moves a car-sized boulder at the entrance to Wadi Mistal during construction of a modern highway where Hadash is situated. In 3 years time access to the villages in this area will be much easier, prompting mixed feelings.

“We have our work, just as you have yours,” proudly spoken by a young women out collecting firewood for her cooking fire. It is sometimes a different case for young men seeking work in the new economy, especially those in remote locations.

Hadash village. Accessed only by a steep narrow track requiring a capable 4x4 vehicle. Hadash is a snapshot of life as it once was in Oman. Existence of the village remains largely due to the spring water channelled from the mountainside by intricate falaj irrigation systems much as it was centuries past.
