Any time I work on a project, I try to keep two things in mind. First, I try to remember to always seek the truth, even if there is no such thing. My interest as a storyteller and filmmaker isn't solely reliant on what can be fabricated or manipulated. Rather, I enjoy presenting a subject as honestly and as genuinely as I can. My goal is to not sacrifice the truth in pursuit of entertainment. Another thing I tell myself is to not care what others think, but to care how they feel. It is important to me that I trust my own instincts and make something that creates a certain feeling. However, it is equally important to me that no one involved in the project feels misrepresented or manipulated in any way. With this film, Stephanie graciously allowed me to tell her story with her full blessing and Colombian enthusiasm.
A couple years ago, I had the opportunity to study documentary filmmaking while studying abroad on a ship in the Mediterranean. During this time, I was able to travel around with my camera while making short films for college credit and my own amusement. The opportunity in Colombia would allow me to develop my eye as a filmmaker and show me what it really takes to work in the industry. A mentorship with a professional like Mr. Rapsey would allow me to take my skills to the next level and would be the catalyst for my pursuit of becoming a professional filmmaker. Stephanie has also given me her blessing to take her grandmother out to lunch in Bogotá.
