It's a long hard winter and the ger is the accommodation of choice for Gobi living Mongolians. It is simple to erect and the whole lot can be packed up and moved in under an hour. They offer tremendous protection from the elements, and the dung fuelled fire provided temperatures that reduced us to our shorts and vests whilst it was -20ºc outside!

The carcass of this vehicle appeared at one of the ger camps. Emptied of anything useable, it's carcass left to be picked at by passers-by. Sometimes even vehicles can't survive the harsh conditions.

The Mongolian Yak is perfectly designed to survive the severe conditions that the Gobi can produce. It's thick coat offers almost floor length protection and it's large hooves are ideal for scraping away snow. It survives on a diet of only short grasses, and is best suited to altitudes of 2000m and above.
