Here in Arequipa

USA | Wednesday, 10 October 2007 | Views [330]

After spending the night asleep (sort of) in the airport in Lima, I flew this morning to Arequipa, a one hour flight south. Amazing to fly over some gigantic canyons!

Jeanne picked me up at the airport, which had an outside observation deck. On one side of me, I saw Jeanne, on the other I saw El Misti -- one of three volcanoes that surrounds this town of about 1 million people. The airport was tiny -- I had to walk down a set of stairs to get to the tarmac.

This city is neat. Lots of colors, embroidery, tasty snacks, big plazas, the largest of which is the Plaza de Armas. Think pigeons, photographers, buses, a big church -- in short, a bustling South American town.

For lunch, we went to a vegetarian restaurant and for $1.00 we had all the veggies, soup and desert. Que bien!

So I'll sign off here and try and upload some photos.

Ciao!
