The laneways of the Old City in Ahmedabad hold many stories of both ancient and contemporary life. A 200 year old dwelling built up against a 400 year old building joined to 600 year old architecture provides a visual feast of texture and colour. In contrast this family is amidst contemporary daily life oblivious to their everyday surroundings captivating my heart and how I will remember it forever and share it with the world through my lens.

The city of Ahmedabad is famous for their Kite Flying festival in January. The string of the kites is dyed pink and laced with glass powder to competitively contest with other participants from the rooftops. This is a celebration of the end of the winter months welcoming in summer. The contrast between the ancient architecture juxtaposed with the contemporary synthetic dye used for the traditional festival reveals the layers of India’s extensive history and cultural strength.

This homeless man wanders alone in the streets of the Old City of Ahmedabad amongst the buzz of the Kite Flying festival. Draped in the highest quality handmade textiles produced by India’s ancient artisanal techniques before the layered architectural backdrop provokes nostalgia.
