    Clew bay, on the west coast of Ireland, as seen from 'the Reek', as Croagh Patrick is known to locals. The bay is said to contain 365 islands, some only meters across, some inhabited. by: niallmac Views[179] Loose rubble and scree make for a challenging surface to walk on. The tradition in years past had been to ascend barefoot, though there are less and less souls hardy enough today to attempt that. by: niallmac Views[255] A difficult hike in good weather, pilgrims and hiking enthusiasts take to Croagh Patrick all year round. The weather on the west coast of Ireland is notoriously unpredictable however and sunshine at the foot of the mountain is no guarantee of fair weather at the summit. by: niallmac Views[604] The wind that blows in from over the Atlantic ocean, just a few miles away, provides another hazard, unsettling less surefooted walkers. People of all ages make the annual pilgrimage, from toddlers, carried up by their parents, to grandparents. by: niallmac Views[255] The little chapel atop Croagh Patrick. A religious service is held there on the last Sunday in July erery year, drawing crowds of catholics in the tens of thousands. An alter is built on one gable end of the building from which the priest conducts a mass at regular intervals over the course of the day.
