Loose rubble and scree make for a challenging surface to walk on. The tradition in years past had been to ascend barefoot, though there are less and less souls hardy enough today to attempt that.

A difficult hike in good weather, pilgrims and hiking enthusiasts take to Croagh Patrick all year round. The weather on the west coast of Ireland is notoriously unpredictable however and sunshine at the foot of the mountain is no guarantee of fair weather at the summit.

Clew bay, on the west coast of Ireland, as seen from 'the Reek', as Croagh Patrick is known to locals. The bay is said to contain 365 islands, some only meters across, some inhabited.
