The wind that blows in from over the Atlantic ocean, just a few miles away, provides another hazard, unsettling less surefooted walkers. People of all ages make the annual pilgrimage, from toddlers, carried up by their parents, to grandparents.

The little chapel atop Croagh Patrick. A religious service is held there on the last Sunday in July erery year, drawing crowds of catholics in the tens of thousands. An alter is built on one gable end of the building from which the priest conducts a mass at regular intervals over the course of the day. Pilgrims pass through the chapel to receive communion and pass out the rear to rejoin the congregation.

A difficult hike in good weather, pilgrims and hiking enthusiasts take to Croagh Patrick all year round. The weather on the west coast of Ireland is notoriously unpredictable however and sunshine at the foot of the mountain is no guarantee of fair weather at the summit.
