Nina goes travelling...

In the hills in Thailand...

UNITED KINGDOM | Monday, 2 March 2009 | Views [783] | Comments [10]

Ok, soo much to update you from only 4 days! Bangkok seems a long time ago now.. on Friday I went to the floating market on the outskirts of Bangkok. Met a lovely couple from Canada that are now living in Kuala Lumpa. Hopefully I will get to see them later on my trip when I go down there. The floating market was cool but I guess pretty much aimed at toursists now, selling items on long river boats. In the evening I took an overnight train to Chiang Mai which is in the hills in the North of Thailand. Overall the train was comfortable with sleeping bunks, one at the top and a lower one on each side of the train. I can't tell you about the train without telling you about the toilet... so I went in relieved that it was a western style one even with toilet paper... I'm onto a good thing I thought! So I wiped the seat and put the paper down and it disappeared... into the ground.. straight onto the track??? Anyway the journey was comfortable overall and I met 2 lovely girls from England that were also on the same tour as me. We arrived together at the hotel on Saturday. Had lunch together and checked out the local night market... loads of lovely things but i cant buy much yet till I get to the end of my travels really. Sunday the adventure began. We were collected from the hotel in a truck and began our trek. After the first 30 mins we took a dip in a lake and had lunch. The next 2 hours were TOUGH!! Uphill trekking and I am no expert! Anyway I made it and we arrived at a hut with a family who also lived there. We visited the nearby remote village with really cute kids and very much a subsistence way of life.. animals all over the place, I dont need to explain what they are for! We went back to the hut for lunch and had a lovely meal (I am vegetarian here). Our guide then lit a log fire and we proceeded to get our hut ready for bed. In midst of this, Sam (one of the girls) screamed seeing a cow behind our hut, it was dark and all we could see were these cow eyes looking at us. We hadnt noticed them but they had been there the whole time. The night was one with strange noises of animals, crickets and smell of cow dung etc. I managed to have my second shower in the morning in the toilet hut with cold water from a pipe. We continued trekking (I'm still no good) and met some more people when we reached a waterfall and continued our trek to have lunch. Lunch was followed by elephant trekking.. I had no idea they can eat soooo fast! Bananas were swallowed whole by the minute, and his trunk kept reaching back at us for more! The next part was bamboo rafting which was GREAT fun. There was a point whereby the tour guide stopped and suggested to us to jump from a height. We all said no way, we would hit our head on the rocks fearing the water would be shallow. Anyway he and an irish guy did it and showed us that that part of the water was deep enough... I couldnt resist. I climbed up and thought Im just going do it, so I jumped! It was such a feeling rising back to the surface. I was the only girl to give it a go. So now, aching from our trip, I did a few laps in the pool and we're heading out shortly to the centre for a thai massage. Very cheap here, about 140 bht per hr (about 3 pounds). We're also all meeting the rest of the people from the group for our last night together.. everyone is going in different directions. It still hasnt sunk in that I'm here on my own.. when people find out the first reaction I get is wow, you're so brave. I've just met some people who are travelling on the slow boat to Loas tomorrow too which is my next destination. I'll upload some pics if I get time before I leave tomorrow morning. That's it for now!

Wow! Not sure if you got my last comment :-s

Anyway sounds amazing. Glad you're having fun. It has been one week already!! Elephant trekking sounds fun, they sound a lot more tame than the ones you see in Africa if you are feeding them!! Trust you to be the only girl to jump in the water - that is so you! If i was there i think you would have just pushed me!

At least you are meeting people on the way to places to keep you company. Nothing new to tell you since my last email about 5 mins ago. Take some pics and send them soon! Speak in a few hours. Take care, eat well and make sure you wash behind your ears :p xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Hey Nins,

Elephants still alive after you sat on them? No wonder they eat soo much in such a short space of time...they obviously needed the energy after carrying you around! I take it these Elephants didn't have weight restrictions?? :p

Sounds like you are having an awesome time, i am sooooo jealous, wish i could be there with you, as opposed to being sat at a desk getting exited that it's nearly lunch time!!

Well done for jumping into the water..like Dee said, such a you thing to do.

What did you do when you saw the cows eyes starting at you? Lol...did you have to put your glasses on and go and investigate CII style?

Anyway i'm missing my partner in crime...carry on having lots of fun. xxxx

Well done brave girl for going it solo on your trip in the typical Chande fashion--yes thanks we enjoy our own company!! and also for plunging too! Priyas L'oreal offer s come thru now and she has to decide how long to travel before starting work. Looks like she is opting for 6 months and looks like will have to travel solo like you> so better advise her and keep loads of notes for her. Met up with Mum n Dad and devina & sudhesh at Mittuls wedding yesterday. Good food. Keep an eye out for cigars for me at the end of your trip. Pack of 25 for around £ 15-to 20, ideally a cuban brand called Josel Piedra, if possible otherwise any others will do.Keep well, Love manoj

Hi Neena
Nice to hear from you - told you you are very brave to go solo! But that's the spirit and keep it up. Very interesting to read your descriptive journal and glad to note all is going well with you. The elephants can go bananas, but you make sure you get your daily quota of your greens for being a vegetarian so you have plenty of stamina and strength to travel further. You seem to be taking the bull by the horn (or shall we say the cow?) moving from place to place, meeting people and facing all elements and challenges in a sprit of high adventure. Go with the flow and enjoy yourself to the max! Very proud of you and look forward to seeing your pics in your next instalment. Take care and have loads of fun. Best wishes and love, Avnish Uncle

Hi Charlie! Enjoyed reading your despatches.Glad you are having a fab time. You certainly are on an adventurous trip! Quite hillarious reading about cows behind the hut in the middle of the night! They do bite!Knowing how fast you drive, just watch it, they have speed restrictions there when you ride an elephant!! or you get SP30!Enjoy the journey, Laos should be fun, make sure it is not a slow boat to China!!

All well here.Krishna dropped in yesterday at G/Gate and gave us a briefing on her trip to India.

Enjoy the trip. Bravo girl! Keep it up.All proud of you.

Love, Uncle Charlie!! xxx

p.s.awaiting your next despatch, Miss Reporter!

Hey Nina,

Certainly sounds like you're having an epic adventure. Never associated elephants with bananas- sure you weren't riding on monkeys?! I'm glad you're enjoying it, and am jealous you're out there travelling- keep on making the most of it. For me it's time for more exams, lucky boy, I know... there you were, thinking you had it all- but no!

Take care,
Love Shiv

Hi Nina,
Good to read the adventures of another niece also in asia. You obviously have not travelled in trains in India where the toilets (usually filthy!)used to be of 2 varieties, the western and the eastern (low squat variety) and the open hole means if squatting you are even closer to earth speeding past your a.. and you leave your 'mark' along the way!!
The elephant rides, encounters with cows at night and leaping off cliffs proove what holiday adventures are made of, and a true Chande in being happy to travel on your own!
Keep up your 'reports' on the next chapter of the adventures...
Love Nishituncle xx

Hi Nina

You def are having an adventurous holiday and trust you to take that leap into the water - sounds like you! That village setting and the sounds of animals and cricket and smell of cow dung sound very familiar - jog memories of India / Africa. It would be nice to see some of the pictures with your next installment which we are all looking f/w to reading. By now you must hv made further plans after Laos. we are all fine - not much to report as it would all sound very boring anyway compared with your adventure packed holiday where you are far away fr this rat race we are entangled in, chasing our tails - slight difference in the animals!
Enjoy and look after yourself and eat well. Kiru

An interesting detailed account of your experiences! It would be a good experience to meet up with the couple fromm Canada and stay in KL.Trekking experience sounds like an endurance test, especially going uphill! Glad you are taking it in your stride! Must be interesting to watch a group of elephants in their natural habitat.
Must be fun diving from a great height! You are brave!
Thai massage must feel well earned after an arduous journey! Make the most of these massages when you are trekking and roughing it out!
We await to hear about your experiences in Laos, which is a pretty country too!We are all well here. It was good to meet up with Manojuncle and Lattaaunty at the wedding last Sunday at Mitul's wedding.Take care! Lots of love and take care!Daddy
