My Photo scholarship 2011 entry

The photos I have submitted tell the story of human plight in the midst of natural beauty. On the Indonesian Island of Java, poverty leads some people to risk death and injury by living in the crater of a volcano, in order to collect money thrown in by others as religious offerings. The contrast of beauty and suffering provides a fascinating story.
I have had a fascination with photography from an early age. It is closely linked to my love of travel, however a good photograph can be taken anywhere.
For me, photography is always a means of telling a story. It is not enough to define photographic skill based on the piece of advanced technology in the photographer’s hand. An expensive camera cannot make a good photograph; these can often be achieved with a simple compact camera. The photographer needs to capture the right moments in the right way.
The challenge lies in the ability to effectively portray scenes and occurrences to those who are not there to see these things for themselves. A good photograph must be able to take the viewer’s mind to the time and place in which it was taken. It must exhibit the depth and emotion experienced by the photographer at the moment it was taken. Only then can a photograph be described as truly exceptional. There is nothing more satisfying than the compliments of friends and family who are able to experience what I have experienced, through my photographs. For these reasons, I want to win this scholarship.
