5:35AM. Steps lead the way to the mouth of the crater. As the air consists mostly of sulphur and not oxygen, moving small distances can be painful.

5:15AM. I am now in the valley and looking across at the volcano. Sulphur from the crater fills the air and is harmful to the lungs. Locals cover their faces, but this does not help.

5:40AM. It is shocking to discover impoverished people living in the crater, trying to collect money that is thrown inside by visitors. The sulphur and heat must make life intolerable. How can such a beautiful place contain such human suffering? The contrast is overwhelming.
