Wondering and Wandering I graduated. Now what? Do I live the life I never wanted to live? The one where I move to the city, get a job in a corporate cubicle, and slave away 60 hours a week for $40,000 a year? No thanks. How about 5 years down the road when I settle on a girl I don't truly love, buy the car I don't need, have the marriage that won't last, buy the home I can't afford? No thanks. I want to see things, I want to experience life in every way. This is the only life I've got, I might as well make the most of it and do something I won't foget. So here I am, travelling the world one step at a time. Where I'm going is yet to be decided, how long I'm there is up in the air, but one thing's for sure. Whatever I do, where ever I go, I'm going to be living. You can count on that.

German Pirates

So I went and saw Pirates of the Caribbean 3 today with Flo...it was in German. Kinda made me laugh. German pirates. If you know me, you know I have this eager fascination with pirates. Still trying to work out why. In case you are wondering, Im in the Tegel district of Berlin, about 50 meters from the lake. I had an epiphany today. I have absolutely no idea what Im going to do with my life. Thats one of the worst kind. Really though, this guy, clueless. If you have any idea what I should be doing if not traveling, I would love for you to let me know. If you can read the future and know what I should be doing in 5 years, that would also be of great help. Thanks.

Ah Alex, seeing the light is a wonderful thing. Now you have to see where that light leads you. I am sure that your guardian angel will help out there. GF likely knows him/her personaly.

I'm glad you've joined the club. I think you're alright not knowing what you're going to be doing in 5 years. That's a pretty healthy outlook on life, I think. Even if it's not, you're definitely not alone. :)

How the HELL am I supposed to come up with a plan for you when I STILL don't have one for myself? The first time someone asked me about my 5 year plan, it was 1981 and I had just arrived in Texas with all I held dear at 23, my cat. Five year plan? I didn't even know what I was going to do the next day. I got that job, so I must've made up some BS answer.

I've pretty much been on the same plan since. It hasn't turned out too bad, if you don't count 2 dead marriages, earned and lost fortunes, that one bass player, 3 stays in the asylum, that one night in Juarez, the 7 year exile in East Texas, raising a GIRL, catering with an ADD gnat, and that one day in Texarkana.

The moral of this true confession is: maybe you should consider a 3-month plan first. And work your way up to a 1-year plan. Knowing you as I do, I wouldn't recommend that you EVER plan more than 2 years in advance.

Besides I'm living proof that you can make all the plans you want, but ultimately, the gods will laugh in your face.

Gee, and I was working so hard to get/stay out of the pedantic mode.

No one can give you the answer you seek - it has to be yours.

Some questions for you to answerer:
What is your passion?
What is it that makes you angry?
What do you see in the world that _must_ be fixed?
What is the thing/concept that you want to nurture?

The answers are not life long commitments, they are today's sign-posts. And the signs change as you grow, or perhaps we just learn to read them better.

Here's the thing - you don't have to get it right the first time! If you didn't quite get it right, look at the signs, pay your bill and adjust.

If you had asked me when I was your age what I would be doing 24 on, my answer would be very far from where live has brought me. If you had told me I would have protested loudly. But you know what, I think that life has brought me to a good place. And do you know what else, it doesn't matter what anybody else thinks.

What you do have to do is make a choice. If you are lost and direction is a good one. Pick something, start walking and watch for the signposts.

PS. Tegel is one of the more beautiful districts. Borrow a bike and ride to Teufelsberg, the view is astounding.

so, did you enjoy the german version? i liked the english version a lot of pirates.. did you get to see 28 weeks later yet? granted in german it might not be as good, but it was DAMN good in english.. miss ya muchos buddy and glad to hear youre still alive and kicking and dealing with kiddos!

Hey, I know. Keep traveling, but to Grand Cayman! Show up there during pirate week then hop aboard a ship. That would be freaking cool! Or travel north up to Alaska and work on a fishing boat. It would be pirate-like... Or maybe not I hear it's dangerous. If you come home and stay a while I should be getting close to graduating, hopefully. If you're around long enough we'll take off together or if I'm not far behind I'll catch up with you. Only for a little while though. Your mom (and my Dad) would kill me if I didn't get my PhD. Oh yeah, did I tell you about how Hughes wanted to block me from taking a class so I changed my major. Then made a B in the class he told me I needed Organic to take. Haha, probably should have gotten an A but lack of trying for some reason was holding me back. Good talking with you the other day. We'll chat soon.
