My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited
Rwanda | Friday, July 5, 2013 | 5 photos
My experience in South Africa and Rwanda convinced me that one of the most fruitful and untapped ways of empowering whole communities lies in the use of photography. As a universal language, photography captures stories and translates them for everyone. The rising use of social media and the accessibility of mobile camera phones means that these stories can be shared across the globe.
As a political cartoonist that has used drawing to speak to the international community--and has worked on bringing attention to various topics from gun violence to deforestation--photography has become my new medium when I travel to document stories of diverse people and their environments. As a student fascinated by the power of photography, I look forward to documenting landscape images to show the beauty of various areas around the world, while further bringing attention to the environmental changes that are occurring due to climate change. I believe that the 2013 World Nomad Travel Photography Scholarship will augment my education in public health and development by offering a deeper understanding of using photography appropriately as a medium for social development and awareness.
