The things I see

My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

Australia | Saturday, September 25, 2010 | 5 photos

The series of photographs were taken while on a walk in my local area. They are a collection of images which reflect the detail hidden in plain sight. The photographs are of ordinary things which people tend to overlook. The photographs focus on the profusion of growth that comes during an Australian winter.

I’m currently studying Visual Art at the University of South Australia. I have been taking photos in a photography context for a little over 2 years. I have a keen interest in the natural world but I also like to photograph people who are not posing. I find it shows more about the kind of people they are when they think no one is watching and their relationship with those around them. Although this form of photographing people is rather tricky and more likely to have a lower success rate for consistently wonderful photographs it does produce some true gems; the chance to see those unguarded moments of trust, caring or silliness.

I would like to win this scholarship for the opportunity it offers learning from an experienced photographer; to learn how to achieve a higher success rate in capturing clear photos. To be able to translate the moments that call to me into photographs, to share with the rest of the world. I want to be able to share my wonder in the colours, movements and emotions in the world surrounding me. In short I want to learn everything I can.
