Normandy

FRANCE | Sunday, 11 March 2007 | Views [467]

Well my last trip to France was a very solemn trip. Sally, Bec and I joined the trip to Normandy for the weekend. We travelled down to Portsmoth for the over night ferry crossing. We decided to upgrade to a cabin for the night to get some sleep. Well after the beds dropping from the ceiling and not enough room to swing a cat the room wasnt too bad.

Morning arrived and the first stop was Reoun where Joan of Arc was burned at the stake. Very quaint little town with as usual a Notre Dame Cathedral (they are everywhere in France) there was a lovely little church in memory of St Joan.

We then travelled to a georgeous sea side village for a late lunch before going to LaFleur to see the worlds longest tapestry (60m I think). It was quite amazing to see all this based on the history of William the Conqueror. To think this was made over 1000 years ago the images were amazing. Our last stop was the Bayeux war cemetery. Very emotional place set amongst the main road.

Finally we arrived in Caen to our accomodation not being sorted so of course us being good aussies ventured next door to the bar to get to know some of our fellow travellers. We eventually got our rooms for a quick change and out again to a lovely frence resturant were we braved the snails.

Day 2 we went to the American War Cemetery. So many crosses or star of davids marking graves with so many young lives lost tragically. Walking down to Omaha beach(I was in shorts weather was great) looking back up the cliff to remember the men/boys that lost their lives helping stop world war 2.

Last stop was Arromanches which was the sight of the man made harbour that was built in 12 days back in 1944. It was amazing to learn that this harbour was built in England and pretty much dragged accross the channel to be built. Without this harbour it would have been a struggle to win the war.

Well I have had my last crepe, my last french wine and last snail in Viva La France. It is a lovely country and would love to come back again one day.
