The girls all stand in a line, waiting to be called on stage to perform. They chat, smile and dance along to the music until it is time to step onto the oil-slicked floor. It is only herself in front of a club of intoxicated partygoers.

The audience sat on the edge of their seats, as the cabaret performer fluttered her feathers and blood began to pour from her lips. A very bizarre show. I had to edge closer and closer to the front of the stage to get a detailed shot of her stage makeup. Any fault in her confidence during the act did now show, until after when I met her backstage, petrified by the size of the crowd.

The tricks involving eating fire, twirling flaming batons and swinging from suspended hoops last only seconds; the opportunity to capture the act is even shorter. Over several nights, coming back to the same club to photograph the girls performing, I finally got a clear shot of the girls in action. When I showed them the images after hours, they were so happy with the result.
