After coming back from Chapada Diamantina (the Natural Park in Bahia) leaving behind Julio, Matheus, Albertao & Renata i had to go back to Salvador (7 hours night bus ride) and was planning to go Aracaju a town 4 or 5 hours North in the State of Sergipe. Change of plan as i was supposed to meet a couple of people there and couldn t reach them i decided to head for Maceio in the state of Alagoas where at least there is a youth hostel (travelling alone it s always a better place to meet other travellers). Maceio is a lot further North than Aracaju and it takes me a good 10 hours on the bus to get there ... The town hasn t got too much in term of nightlife but the beaches around really makes up for it (Praia do Frances, Praia do Gunga, ...) even the beach near the hotel is pretty nice which is quite rare in Brazil (for most of the nicest beaches you have to travel usually at least half and hour out of town).
After few days in Maceio i hop on another bus (only 5 hours this time!)to reach Recife where i arrived on Wednesday 18th. As planned i met with the guys i met in Chapada: Julio, Matheus, Albertao who are actually from Recife. Matheus comes to pick me up at the bus station and Albertao host me in a spare flat in the area of Boa Viagem. This is the best area in town and i am 2 minutes walk from the beach. Absolutely great! Albertao i can t thank you enough for your hospitality! Only scary bit the sign on the beach that warns you about shark attacks ... My friends reinsure me that they only eat surfers so i ll be fine haha!!! well also i can be very courageous i did not venture too far of the shore ...
Otrherwise Recife prooves to have much more to offer that i originally thought. Apart from the great nightlife (you can get a taste in the pictures - there were taken at a club called downtown), Recife has a really interesting history it was actually founded by the Dutch rather than the portuguese under the Maurice de Nassau and prospered with rise of the sufar cane trade. The town has also a very interesting music scene and is the birth place of the Maracatu (music i played once in Rio for the ones that followed the blog). It s a very african influenced music with percussion and song about the tales of every day life. It has also evolved into modern fusion version like the band Nation Zombie that blends it with Rock and electro sounds.
On the first day in Recife we took the car and went to Porto de Galinhas (see the pictures with cartoon looking chicken). It s one hour form Recife and was definetly worth the visit. There is a coral reef 100 metres in front of the beach. It creates natural swimming pool where the fishes gather and swim around you (well specially if you feed them!). Wheather was perfect! It was all too good ... The car broke down on the way back and we got stranted for few hours at in a petrol station.
During the following days in Recife i was taken every where by the guys and hang out with their friends - really great bunch. Another chance to improve the portunhol as very few spoke english but for the first time i felt a bit more confortable conversing in the language ... We also checked out Olinda which is a Portuguese colonial town right next to Recife. It is really pretty and as live music and quite a bit of street life (artefact, food store, ...). It s feel a bit similar to the old town in Salvador but without the hassle on the street. Apparently it also has one of the most interesting carnaval of Brazil with giant puppets parading in the street as well as wider range of music than Rio s Carnaval with the following music (Fevro, Maracatu, Olodum, Samba, ...).
Must say was really hard leaving Recife as i felt so welcomed and also met so really cool people there ... Was originally going to stay till the 22nd and changed my ticket for the 25th ...
Anyway finally took a bus to the town of Fortaleza 12 hours ride up North. Here there is festival of Axe music (quite caraibeen sounding). Brazilians told me that it is the closest i ll get to the Carnival atmosphere away form carnaval time (February). Got to be check out!

FRANCAIS
De retour de Chapada Diamantina (le parc naturel de Bahia) et sans Julio,
Matheus, Albertao et Renata (qui sont retournés à Morro de São Paulo) je me
retrouve de nouveau à Salvador (après 7 heures de bus de nuit). J avais prévu d
aller à Aracaju, une ville à 4 ou 5 heures au Nord dans l état de Sergipe.
Changement de programme je devais retrouver deux personnes là et n arrivant pas
à les joindre je décide d aller à Maceio dans l état d Alagoas. Là au moins il
y a une auberge de jeunesse (quand on voyage seul c est toujours mieux pour
rencontrer d autres voyageurs). Maceio
est beaucoup plus au Nord qu Aracaju et il me faut bien 10 heures de bus pour y
arriver … La ville n est pas extrêmement animée la nuit mais les plages
environnantes compensent largement cet aspect (Praia do Frances, Praia do
Gunga, ...) même la plage proche de l hôtel est agréable ce qui est plutot rare
au brésil (d habitute les bonnes plages sont a au moins une demi heure du
centre ville).
Après quelques jours à Maceio je saute dans un autre bus (seulement 5 heures
cette fois!) pour me rendre à Récife ou j arrive Mercredi 18. Comme prévu je
retrouve les potes de la
Chapada: Julio, Matheus, Albertao qui habitent la ville.
Matheus passe me prendre à la station de bus et Alberto m héberge dans un
studio dans le quartier de Boa Viagem. C est le meilleur coin de la ville et je
suis à seulement 2 minutes de la plage. Fantastique! [Alberto je ne pourrais
jamais te remercier assez pour ton hospitalité!]. Un seul aspect un peu inquiétant
le panneau sur la plage qui met en garde contre les attaques de requins ... Mes
amis me rassurent ils ne mangent que les surfeurs donc ca devrait aller haha!!!
Bien que je puisse faire
preuve d un grand courage en cette occasion je décide de ne pas m aventurer
trop loin du bord ...
Autrement Récife s avère plus interressant que ce que j aurais pu imaginer. En
plus d une très bonne vie nocture (un petit avant goût dans les photos –
prisent dans la boite Downtown), Recife a une histoire très interressante: la
ville ne fut pas fondée par les portugais mais par les Hollandais sous le
commandement de Maurice de Nassau. Elle se developpa avec le commerce de la
canne à sucre. La ville a aussi une scène musicale spécifique et est notamment le
berceau du Maracatu (une musique que j ai brièvement jouée à Rio – pour ceux
qui suivent le blog). C est très influencé par la musique africaine avc des
percussions et des chants qui raconte le quotidien. Elle a aussi evolué aujourd hui dans des
versions mordernes fusionnées comme le groupe Nation Zombie qui la mélange avec
le rock et des sons électros.
Le premier jour à Récife nous avons pris la voiture pour aller à Porto de
Galinhas (voir la photos notamment avec le poulet assez cartoonesque). C est à une
heure de Récife et vaut franchement le détour. Il y a une barrière de corail à
100m de la plage. Elle crée des piscines naturelles où les poissons nagent
autour de vous (bon spécialement si on les nourris!). Le temps était parfait! C était un peu trop parfait surement
… la voiture nous a laché au retour et nous nous sommes retrouvés coincés
pendant plusieurs heures dans une station d essence.
Le jours suivants à Récife j ai été emmener par les gars au quatre coins de
la ville et est passé pas mal de temps avec leurs amis – un groupe très sympa.
Ce fut aussi l occasion de faire avancer un peu mon portunhol car peu parlais
anglais – pour la première fois je me suis senti un peu plus à l aise dans les
conversations … Nous sommes aussi allé à Olinda une ville d architecture
coloniale portuguese juste à côté de Récife. C est assez mignon et rappelle un
peu la vieille ville de Salvador mais sans le harcelement incessants des
vendeurs de rue. Apparemment Olinda a aussi un des carnavals les plus
interressants du Brésil avec des marionnettes géantes et une plus grande
variété musicale que le carnaval de Rio avec les musiques tels que Fevro, Maracatu, Olodum, Samba, ...
Je dois dire qu il a été assez dur de quitter Récife tant j ai été bien
acceuilli et à cause des gens que j ai pu rencontrer là ... Je devais normalement
rester jusqu au 22 mais j ai changé mon ticket pour le 25 ...
Bref finalement j ai pris un bus pour Fortaleza – un trajet de 12 heures au
Nord. Ici il y a un festival de musique Axé (un son assez caraibéen). Les brésiliens
me disent que c est ce qu il y aurait de plus proche du carnaval en dehors de l
époque du carnaval (en février). Je vais mener l enquête!
