The Bai or Meeting House

A Bai (traditional Meeting House)

A Bai (traditional Meeting House)

One of the most interesting buildings in each village is the Bai.  These are the traditional meeting houses.  Unfortunately not all are still in great shape; but many thankfully have been preserved.   These were for governing elders and much of the design and construction is representational of traditional elements.  An example is each corner post represents a clan and the door jambs represent the leading women (Palau is a Matriachal society so women control part of the Chiefs system and the inheritance).

I love the Bai's because of the lively decorative arts.  They are painted yellow with storyboards showing mythological tales and current events.  Symbols include tridacna shells, bats for respect and circles for money.
