The professor and the teacher

My office!

My office!

Work has taken over our lives!  We are back to the rat race.  Not really.  This picture is of my occasional office.  We go to a family living centre to plant seeds for distribution to the villages (once the floods have dropped).

I am now professor Lesley at the University of Pannasastra and Jan is teacher at the University school!.  This means I am teaching undergraduates management, communications and environmental science subjects.  Jan teaches English.  This university teaches in English from secondary level.

Mainly it is fun - the students are bright and engaging.  I enjoy interacting with them and giving them an insight into how the rest of the world thinks.  Cambodians do not tend to be critical thinkers - they are more likely to accept things as they are.  And of course they find us pretty amusing with our barang or foreigner ways!.  Jan does have to confiscate the odd mobile phone from the teenagers (the office then rings the parent to pick up the phone with the consequence the parent gives the child a stern telling off).

As well as the University and school we have our regular teaching with CCT at the orphanage and drop in centre.  The street kids continue to surprise us with how quickly they learn - especailly in the pool.

I am also teaching some locals to become swimming teachers.  That is one of the most rewarding things as there is no provision to train them here and they try to learn from the internet!

So most days we really do deserve our happy hour 50 cent beers!
