Europe #6

ITALY | Sunday, 3 November 2013 | Views [230]

Hi Again:

Well, the 15-day journey has concluded, though your quick glances at the trip are ongoing.  As we were told at a party last night, “You toured half of Europe”.  Maybe not quite that much, but it was a great trip.

Now, let’s return to Lake Como for a few moments.  We stayed in Menaggio.  Two other villages on the lake that are well-known are Bellagio and Veranna.  Let’s tackle Bellagio, which is located at the tip of a peninsula that extends out into the lake.

Photo #1 – Taking the ferry across the lake to Bellagio we look back at Menaggio.

Photo #2 & #3 – Approaching Bellagio on the ferry.

Photo #4 – Keaka on a typical street in Bellagio (and any number of other cities and villages we visited).

Photo #5 – And, on many of these streets you have to share the wealth of space with motorized vehicles.

    Photo #6 – A typical Bellagio scene.

Photo #7 – Another Bellagio street scene.

May have gotten carried away and duplicated a photo, but deletion of photos is beyond my pay grade!

Bellagio, like most of the lake communities, have a ferry dock and a number of cafes where you can sit and drink or grab a meal.  Then some shopping and lots of people living above the shopping in buildings that seemingly have been there forever.  It’s quite a different lifestyle to be sure.  Residents would be as apt to travel any real distance by ferry as by car.  And, walking is what folks do.  Parking is too difficult, even if you have a car.

I believe, now that the trip has concluded, that Lake Como was my favorite stop.  Old, old, old.  Just the notion that most of the structures were constructed hundreds of years ago.  Lots of money!  And, back so many years ago Lake Como must have been for the very, very rich, and it’s hard to imagine with essentially no transportation that all of this was built.  Tight quarters with the lake shore tight to the mountains.  Much transportation by ferry boat – probably one hour from one end to the other.  A railroad connection on the eastside of the lake from the top to the bottom and on to Milan.  A casual, slow pace.  Many places near by (if you lived at Lake Como).  Luzern, Milan, Lugano, Como and St. Moritz and all relatively close by.
