My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

2013 is my year. I am turning 30 on March 12, by the years end my aim is to confidently call myself a portrait photographer!

I’ve recently started a portrait business. I pay my bills working in retail, I don't call it a career, I want to get out.

I learnt photography in school, with a SLR and a darkroom! I got my first DSLR in 2008, it opened up a whole new world.

My other passion? Travel.
I have seen many places and many cultures. I’m fascinated by people, I want to hear everyone’s story and smile with them

I travelled for a year in 2009. I realize I’m lucky to have food on my table and a roof over my head. Many are not as lucky, yet go un-noticed in our society.

I visited Syria in 2009, it was amazing! They made every effort for tourists to feel at ease, we’d hear people saying “Welcome to Syria” wherever we went. Now I am full of sadness, they are suffering hardships not imaginable to you or I. I wish there was something to be done to help.

I would love to learn how best to capture locals authentically, to take portraits of people in their own environments. I would love for someone to see a photo I took and be inspired to make a change in their life to help someone.
