My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited
Haiti | Monday, June 10, 2013 | 5 photos
I grew up overseas, and was given a camera by my father at a young age. I have no formal photography training, and my photographs, spanning countries and decades, have thus far served as my only mirror, guide and mentor: Does the photo accurately represent the moment? Does it capture what I wanted to remember? What do I see when I look at it?
To me, photography and exploration almost seem synonymous—something this scholarship opportunity, I believe, gets at the heart of. Behind the lens, every time we click, we're given the chance to tell a story and explore the ways in which we do that. My goal with this opportunity, therefore, is multifaceted: to grow my technical experience and to be mentored; to continue to challenge and explore my photography in landscape and category where I lack experience; and to seek stories that are waiting to be told. I'm confident that my dedication to bettering my photography and learning about the world would make this experience both personally and professionally rewarding.
