There is a Haitian proverb: Deye mon gen mon, or, "Beyond mountains, there are mountains." Maxsony, the subject of this photo, knows this in both the proverbial and literal sense, but has seemingly triumphed over most of his mountains. Injured in the 2010 earthquake, Maxsony is now a community leader and program advocate for spinal cord injury patients within Haiti. He works in a wheelchair repair shop, shown here.

Education remains more of a privilege than a right in Haiti, with the cost of education simply out of reach for the average family who subsists on less than $2 a day. The opportunity to attend school is taken very seriously, as you can see here.

Haiti is an incredibly mountainous country with comparably few roads to rural and remote areas, an element that makes access to health care difficult. To combat this problem, organizations use mobile clinics—cars packed full of supplies and medical professionals who travel to remote catchment areas to provide counsel, education and medicine, among other things. This photo shows just that: a community health nurse instructing school girls on how—and when—to take the vitamins they're receiving.
