Sandboarding in Huacachina was definitely the highlight of this trip. It was not quite like snowboarding, but it did help me from missing the ski season at home just a bit. I met some really nice people from different parts of the world. I even ran into 2 guys from the Cape, P-Town. Hotel was really cool. Big and CLEAN swimming pool and outdoor bar to socialize. not much else of a town there, but Ica is only 5k away. Ica is a dirty city with a lot of hussle and bussle. Nothing to exciting there. Went to the museum for part of the day. Though many of the displays had been recently stolen, there was still a good variety. This included the mummies. Interesting and creepy. Paracus is a beautiful beach town. Not much happening, but it has the Islas Ballestas with its famous candleabra and the mysterious theories, a large variety of birds (including penguins) and sealions that vacation on the islands regularly. The Reserva Nacional de Paracus lost many of it's famous rock formations in the earthquake this past summer 2007. The Reserva has amazingly beautiful beaches with very few people. Pisco is a disaster area still. There are some buildings that look as though they had not been touched by the earthquake but the building next to it is in a pile. It was really sad to look at all that, that once was, esp the church where over 200 people were killed when the roof caved in. Only the 2 side towers remain. The church continues to hold services in a tent. Though when you are interacting with the people, it seems like business as usual. I think these people are amazingly resilient.
