A passion for telling and listening to stories led me to study sociology at the University of Wisconsin. My paralleled love for photography began in high school, and grew in a film class where I learned the origin of the art. I just returned from a semester abroad, and I look to photography to share my journey. I strive for the ability to capture moments so others can experience them with me, and I would benefit from learning to share others’ stories in an accurate and respectful way. I wrote this poem abroad, and think it illustrates why I would be the perfect candidate:

There is so much beauty hiding behind negative statistics
It is full of sunlit mountains on the horizon,
Full of normal people spreading love daily
And full of potential, as connections are made around the globe that will transcend time
Why must we only show the hate and suffering?
It’s time to believe in a world that is full of good people
I want to share the story of powerful people like my home stay mother who holds her home together without recognition
Hopefully one day I can do something to push this change
I want others to see the beauty I see
Even if it doesn’t move them to act
At least they won’t be blind
