Just like anywhere in the world, the people of Kashgar too are inspired by dreams and fantasy. Here amidst the town bazaar’s stalls of daily goods and necessities, a balloon seller draws kids with cheery balloons of Angry Birds and other universal characters.

Even just a night out in the town square is a special occasion. Almost as if to compensate for the drab landscape, children and women deck out in bright colours and elaborate outfits, and pose for a photograph in the plaza.

As our tour bus driver takes us down the three-hour route he plies daily, he passes a woman and kid riding home on a scooter, and they all pull over to the road shoulder. From the rear of the bus, we watch as he plants a kiss on the woman and pick his little girl up high in the air. He speaks no English, but when the little family gathering is over and it’s back to work, he climbs back in his seat, flashes a small crooked smile to himself, and hums a soft tune all the way down the road.
