At a small local bazaar, several patrons and stallholders put aside the realities of life and gather for a casual chat. Amidst a dusty desert town landscape, the Uyghurs find their joy in simple ways like this.

On the streets of Kashgar, a little Uyghur boy amuses himself with items he finds on the street, as his father metalsmiths a teapot over a bed of hot coal in front of his shop.

Kashgar is an oasis city in the Taklamakan Desert of Xinjiang, and was a key post on the ancient silk road; Today there is still a lively trade of metal and clay pottery, carpets, silk, jewellery, fresh produce, and livestock.

Even just a night out in the town square is a special occasion. Almost as if to compensate for the drab landscape, children and women deck out in bright colours and elaborate outfits, and pose for a photograph in the plaza.
